You weren’t aware how much stuff you had done with Jim until you moved out.
Getting out of bed was a challenge. It was too stiff, too cold. But you wouldn’t crack. You couldn’t.
Eating breakfast was a whole other thing. You sat completely across the room from where you normally sat, casting longing glances to the table farthest from the door in the mess hall. Your friends were trying to coax Jim to eat something, Jim had his head pillowed on his arms and refused to even speak to anybody.
“Hey,” a voice broke your reverie.
“Oh, hey Uhrua. What’s up?”
The woman placed her tray across from yours and slid into the seat, pushing her sleek hair off her shoulder.
“I was just wondering if you and Jim were okay. You usually sit with them.”
You hummed and shrugged, fiddling with your spoon in your cereal.
“You didn’t break up, did you?”
You dropped your spoon in shock.
“Are people saying that??”
Uhrua shrugged then, relaying all the gossip she’d heard since the week you had moved out of Jim’s room.
Talk was going about that Jim kicked you out because you were suspected of being pregnant but nothing was totally confirmed.
“I think I would know if I was pregnant. Plus, if that was true, my brother would make sure we’d have one less captain.”
Uhrua chuckled, but continued on. Others thought Jim had cheated on you and you moved out as soon as possible and were even going so far as to request a transfer to another ship to make a statement. That made you snort.
“Should I disappear for a few days to make them believe I did?”
Even others thought you two had just grown apart, which not many people were a fan of. The two of you were clearly in love and everybody could see it. So nobody really knew a reason. Nobody would have even though of it.
“We’re still together, just taking a break from each other. We decided we spend too much time around each other, we’re too dependent on each other. So we’re just giving each other space to branch out again. But we’re still exclusive.”
Uhrua nodded, even going so far as to mime zipping her lips shut. This made you giggle and you continued on with breakfast until your brother and brother-in-law sat down.

Two more weeks had gone by, almost an entire month. True to your word, you were monitoring Jim through Uhrua. She told you he was constantly miserable. His skin was sallow, dark circles were forming under his eyes, he looked ready to burst into tears at the drop of a PADD.
It tore you up inside. You missed your Jim. He was truly the light of your life. You knew now that he was definitely for real. He loved you and you loved him back. But you had to stay strong. Just a few more days and you would be back in his arms and you could return from where you left off.
“Miss (l/n)?”
“Yes, Mr. McCoy?”
Bones still flinched when you called him by his professional name rather than the nickname he had been dubbed by your boyfriend.
“We have a small injury. Please tend to it. I put the patient in room 4. I’m sorry. You’re the only nurse on hand.”
You didn’t understand why he was apologizing until you opened the door.
Jim sat on the plastic chair used for doctors and nurses at the monitors. You motioned for him to sit on the examination table and he did so, his lips pressing together tightly. You cocked your head to the side and Jim removed his shirt, showing flowering bruises all on his torso and arms. You pressed your fingertips to your lip, fearing you would throw up.
Your hands gently touched his ribcage and Jim groaned. You placed a comforting hand on the back of his own larger hands and he gripped your fingers gently. You massaged the area once again, feeling Jim tighten his fingers but never enough that it would hurt you.
You pulled up a diagram and began marking down where he had major injuries, such as a hairline fracture on more than one of his ribs and internal bruising on his jaw and throat. You wrote all this down in Jim’s record and began prescribing him medicine.
Before you sent him off, you prepared a syringe filled with medicine that would clear up bruising and seal the fractures. One would go in his neck, and one would go in his torso.
You managed to get Jim to relax so you could release the liquid inside him. Then you pulled out several bottles, wrote on the labels how much to take and how often and even bagged them for him.
Jim took the bag from you with one hand and held onto your hand with his other.
You willed yourself to not look in his eyes but the urge was too strong. Looking up at him was a big mistake.
It was exactly as Uhrua told you. His skin was nearly translucent because he had been staying up and not eating enough. He looked exhausted. He must have seriously thrown himself into his work, trying to block out everything else but you supposed it didn’t matter because it didn’t work.
Jim moved to kiss you on the forehead but you tipped up to reach his lips, placing a sweet peck on them. Jim sighed in contentment and moved in for another kiss but you stopped him with your hand. Your eyes flicked to the calendar on the wall and Jim let out a whine, kissing your fingertips instead.
You pushed his lips away and handed him his shirt back. He took it and struggled it on. He hopped off the table and grabbed his medication before turning back to you. You rubbed softly under his eyes, the skin feeling papery and fake under your hands.
Jim’s eyes fluttered closed and you could see how sunken in his face really looked. He looked like he had been grieving the loss of a loved one.
You moved to give him one last kiss when the ship lurched. You crashed into Jim who readily caught you. You both heard screams coming through the med bay from the hall. You removed yourself from Jim’s hold and ran into the larger wing.
Nurses and doctors were flooding out into the hallway but Bones was trying to push them back in. You could see tentacles swarming throughout the handful of glimpses you could actually catch. Bones even urged you to push back the wounded and or unconscious patients.
As suddenly as you had pushed them all into a safe area, several large aliens burst through the door. Most of the doctors and nurses had overturned their work stations and empty hospital beds to shoot the threat from behind cover with their regulation guns.
You were the only nurse without a weapon as you had never been this close to danger before.
The aliens had tentacles that seemed to be longer than anybody could imagine. They dragged on the floor threateningly. Bones motioned for everyone to stay quiet. You looked closer and saw that the aliens had no eyes or nostrils. They based their movements on sound and touch alone. If you just stood still….
CRASH
A dozen syringes and medical beakers tipped onto the floor and were shattered. In the huge mess was Jim, laying on his side, cringing at the new cuts he had digging into his skin.
The aliens made their way towards him and you did the only thing you could think of. You started throwing anything you could get your hands on at them. PADDS, beakers, syringes, medical tape. Your distraction worked and you were faced with some very angry aliens.
Instead of fighting back, you held your arms out to your sides and let them take you up in their many limbs and walk out of the door.
You were placed in a bag that you really hoped was able to sustain itself out in space and the top was tied. You couldn’t see anything. Not where they were taking you, not where any of the people were, how many victims, if there were any.
You felt yourself being beamed out of the ship and onto another. A foreign language filled your ears and what sounded like congratulations were being spread around.
You were carried for a long period of time until you finally saw a bright light and tumbled out of the bag onto a cold, metal floor. You lifted yourself up with your hands and sat back on your heels as your eyes tried to adjust to the light.
In front of you was man who looked to be around your age with a real cape draped around his shoulders. He looked nothing like the aliens that had taken you. He removed himself from the ornate throne that he had previously been sitting upon.
“You must pardon my assistants. They don’t know much about decorum and etiquette for escorting lovely young ladies onto my ship. I am Maymun.”
Maymun helped you up and you noticed that he was very handsome, but he wasn’t really your type. His deep brown eyes were very beautiful and his shock of black hair flopped over onto his tanned forehead that had valleys on it when his eyebrows raised.
“Oh, you’re harmed. Let me fix that.”
Only when he mentioned it did you feel a stinging above your eyebrow. You touched it and flinched away at the feeling.
“I wouldn’t touch that.”
Maymun came back with antiseptic, a bandage and medical tape. He came forward and tried to clean it, but you held up your hands.
“Please, let me do it. I’m a nurse.”
He gave you a look. You kept quiet and almost flinched away when Maymun tried to touch you but he held your chin in place.
“Sometimes, even nurses need caring for.”
Your eyes fluttered closed and you breathed shallowly.
“Why did you come onto the U.S.S Enterprise?”
“So that’s what it’s called. I wouldn’t know. I just go where my assistants lead me. You see, they sense things all through the galaxy. Wherever they are called, that’s where they go.”
“What,” you swallowed nervously. “What do they sense all throughout the galaxy?”
You opened your eyes long enough to see a malicious smirk cross the man’s face.
“Despair,” he whispered.
A heavy shudder rocked your body and Maymun laughed and stood straight up, going to a high tech screen at one end of the room you hadn’t noticed.
“There was serious despair on your ship. Sadness over a miscarriage, a break up. Depression unable to be stopped simply because it runs in the family. Oh, it must have been delicious. The largest amount of sadness was directed at you.”
“Oh no,” you whispered, closing your eyes again as you felt faint.
“Oh yes. We’re going to send your ship a little message. You see, your captain had stolen something of mine, something very important and I need it back. It’s only fair that until I do, I keep the thing he treasures most. If you, please, friends?”
Maymun motioned for someone out of your peripheral to come forward and you were held up as rope was tied around your ankles and knees, your wrists and elbows. You bit back a sob as a gag was placed in your mouth. Tears hadn’t officially begun to spring and you fought them back as hard as you could. This maniac would never see you being weak.
You were dropped back on the floor onto your knees and you winced at the pain. You took a minute to take in your surroundings, hoping you could find anything that would help you.
The walls looked like they were directly out of a cave, the rock curving up like claws but at the same time, looked like waves on the ocean. They were a dark grey and they matched the floor and ceiling, though the floor was polished.
Maymun’s minions had plopped you down facing the screen in front of you and his throne was diagonally to the left of you. Those were the only things in the room besides a large crate in the corner hidden by the screen’s view and a small chair propped against it.
A noise made you jump and you faced the screen once more. You could see the bridge, with everyone’s focus on you, well, you should say the screen that you were on. You knew that once the message disconnected, they would see the stars again. You idly wondered if you ever would.
Spock was standing behind Jim’s chair that was spinning rapidly. Bones was on the other side of Spock in the same stance as him, his hands behind his back. Both of them had very surprised looks on their faces at seeing you.
You were looking for Jim when he appeared on the screen right in front of you, his hands plastered to it. You could see his eyes were puffy and red but his irises never strayed from their bright blue.
“Oh. Hello! Welcome to the show!”
Jim’s focus turned from you to Maymun.
“Give her back to me, you sick bastard!”
Maymun leisurely walked towards you but you held your ground. He grabbed you by the chin and held you up.
“You mean this? I don’t believe she truly belongs to you anymore. Isn’t that right darling?”
You scowled at Maymun and cast a look to Jim which he could read even from however far apart you were.
“But, let’s see! Let’s see if she cries for help!”
The knot at the back of your head was untied and ripped from your mouth so hard it burned.
“Beg, darling. Beg for your sorry excuse for a man comes to rescue you from the big, bad villain!”
Maymun let out a seriously evil laugh and you wondered if he’d ever practiced. Shaking the thought from your mind, you turned to face Jim. Your tired Jim. All of this was your fault. All his suffering. It ended here and now.
“Jim,” you spoke.
Jim’s eyes lit up, the fire newly restored in them. You knew it would work but you suppressed your smirk.
“Come and get me. I dare you.”
